Fossil Fools Week of Action to Unite Student Demands for Universities to Divest From Coal

As part of a national week of action, thousands of students at campuses across the nation are uniting their demands for coal divestment.  The University of North Carolina will be joined in solidarity by Cornell University, Swarthmore College, University of Illinois, Earlham College, College of the Atlantic, and Colby College as they call on their administrations to be climate heroes rather than fossil fools.

The UNC SSC Beyond Coal campaign is calling upon the UNC administration and the UNC Management Company, which invests the endowment, to divest endowment holdings in the worst coal mining and coal burning companies in the country.

UNC Beyond Coal will be pit sitting, taking photo petitions and filming interviews in the pit in conjunction with Fossil Fools Week of Action on Wednesday, April 4 from 11:00 AM-1:00 p.m.

Nat gas is already naturally replacing coal and is expected to significantly reduce the usage of coal going forward. It seems coal’s days numbered due to free market pricing. It will be in the university’s interest to shift away from coal regardless of how much people bitch at them.
